could be open soon, and in my opinion Chadwell would probably prefer to wait for one of those to come calling than any Big Ten offer. After Mike Riley was fired in 2017, Bill Moos had one target that lined up with the consensus and all he had to do was get him. Closing Comment: Given all the candidates out there with head coaching experience, even the flawed retreads, it would almost seem disappointing to pick an unproven coordinator instead. Nothing worked to the point Georgia Southern sealed the deal Saturday night by gaining 642 yards in hallowed Memorial Stadium where Heisman Trophy winners and national champions used to dwell. But they also end there. Closing Comment: Its odd that Campbell didnt make a jump to a better job after last season. At the very least, like Jon Gruden, he knows the kind of player that the NFL prefers. Why It Might Not: Urban Meyer is weird. The state of Colorado isnt that far from Nebraska. He could bring that recipe to Nebraska, which would afford him the necessary resources. Traditional recruiting grounds in Texas and California were either ignored or eventually shriveled up. Why It Might Not: Air Force is his alma mater and thats a big hurdle when hes doing well there. He losta lot. Nebraska He had an up-and-down career thats been mostly down, at least at the head coaching level. So without further ado, lets get into it. His record as a head coach is simply too good to ignore. Second, Im bugged by the Mississippi State thing. Why It Might Not: A longtime coordinator who turned heads with a special season in year two as a head coach, including a Sugar Bowl win over an SEC opponent? He did exceptionally well with very little. The headlines would be juicy. Theres a pretty big crop of them right now and Nebraska should definitely exhaust all options there before looking at coordinators whove never been a head coach. A competent athletic dept. He wasnt exactly a total fraud, but he was given every opportunity to succeed at Texas, a place with numerous built-in advantages and benefits, and really underachieved. Hed be an obvious bridge coach who would have to do a lot to win over the skeptics. That would give him a serious advantage in recruits living rooms, if he can also win games. Sure, but I feel like it would take a lot of rejection for Trev Alberts to dial his number. Fleck has since elevated Minnesota to a level of competition that no one would have thought possible. A steady decline in play resulted in losses piling up and he got the boot. Why It Might Work: Hes a phenomenal recruiter and has demonstrated the ability to both scout and develop talent. The guy everyone wanted once upon a time? Nebraska There is some question whether he has the temperament to lead a program. At this point his work at Louisville may be seen as the outlier. Why It Might Not: Setting aside the baggage that Malzahn allegedly would bring with a reportedly outspoken wife who creates drama, this guy seems entrenched in the deep South. Does Nebraska really want to take a chance on someone with that kind of baggage? For the seventh time since Tom Osborne's retirement in 1997, Nebraska is looking for a coach. Come on. Strong would have to go a long way to prove that hes viable as head-coaching material for a big program. He'd have much better access to the Big Ten Championship Game (as opposed to the SEC Championship Game) playing in the Big Ten West. Why It Might Work: At every stop, Creighton has left the place better than hes found it. Wilsons biggest knock might be his personality. How quickly can they learn his style and become competitive? Why It Might Work: Hes a Husker who happens to be an NFL head coach, almost won a Super Bowl, and hes only 39. Closing Comment: This seems like the safest pick. Its not for everybody. Here are some candidates to watch: Nebraska Football: Coaching Candidates to Replace Scott Frost. candidates Corn Nation, a Nebraska Cornhuskers community, By Silantro An understated, under-the-radar coach who seems to do more with less? By Chris Vannini. After the scandal that forced Jim Tressel to leave Columbus, Meyer moved in and promptly started kicking the entire Big Tens ass. In addition, while his teams have done well overall, there are times when his ability as a play-caller has been costly. It would appease all Husker fans who want to go back to that style from the Osborne days, and theres no better choice for that than Monken. Who should replace Scott Frost at Nebraska? Hes done a decent head coaching job at two different programs with limited resources, and hes turning 51 in December. Mark Stoops, Kentucky coach: Stoops has spent a decade methodically developing the Wildcats into an above-average, competent SEC program. Overall the body work from Martin appears only slightly above average. When he was there, he managed to recruit some NFL talentnot easy to do, given the football programs history and Indianas reputation as a basketball school. Bohl is a Lincoln native, played his college ball at Nebraska and also spent time with the Cornhuskers as an assistant from Frost tried everything: changing coaches, changing approaches. After six years with the Cavaliers he unexpectedly resigned (or retired) in a similarly head-scratching departure. Why It Might Work: Moorhead was an outstanding offensive mind at Penn State and the job he did there was the key in elevating the Nittany Lions to the next level. Meyer can coach college, but can he keep from becoming the focus for all the wrong reasons? You may also remember him as the former OC of the New England Patriots once upon a time. Closing Comment: I was big on Charlie Strong and thought hed kick butt at Texas. Why It Might Not: Assuming he actually took the jobwould he really leave the NFL?Nebraska might be wary of doing a second take of the "former Husker to save program" thing immediately following the Scott Frost debacle, and the last time Nebraska hired an NFL head coach who had nearly won a Super Bowl, it was Bill Callahan. You know who he is. His departure from Oregon also doesnt sit well and he seems to prefer the Florida region of the country. He went 11-2 at Army in 2018. He won a national title in 2000 and racked up several conference championships during his tenure. Nebraska is not the same quality of job it used to be. There may be a candidate who emerges who is not on this list, something thats very likely to happen. There are many who would see this hire as a bit of a desperate move. The meltdown in Minneapolis would be legendary. Hes now the head coach at Jacksonville State in Alabama. Closing Comment: He seems due for a second stint as a head coach, and hes as good as any top coordinator candidate. Why It Might Work: Johnson has quietly built up an impressive resume as a coordinator. Why It Might Not: It would be a serious gamble. Web2023 Commercial Intern Career Services | Nebraska Nucor www.nucor.com 2023 Commercial Intern Posted on: March 1, 2023 Apply Now Internship Expires March 17, Why It Might Work: It only took Urban Meyer two seasons to coach Utah to an undefeated season. Everyone hopes to nab someone who creates the success of Jim Tressel. Nebraska Hes never been a head coach but Johnsons acumen as an assistant makes him someone likely to get an offer soon. It would be a jarring cultural change for him to come to Big Ten country. His return to San Diego State has seen the program maintain its play at a high level in the Mountain West. 2 Related. The next hire must hit because the hamster wheel of coaches since Osborne is worn and rusted. to get more serious about football, but now that they have, the results are showing. Klieman went 69-6 with the Bison and was hired by Kansas State in Dec 2018. And to be fair, though there is potential, his head coaching tenures with both the Nittany Lions and the Texans were not exactly spectacular. Why It Might Work: It would be something of a coup to nab one of the hottest commodities in coaching right now. But Campbell has to get to a certain level this season to be in the mix. His Big Ten familiarity is also a plus. Then he went to Kansas and did the same as every coach who went to Kansas after Mark Mangino. Like Venables at Clemson, Leonhard has to be figuring he has a better job right now. Closing Comment: This would be a bizarre marriage if it happened. Thats insanely good. Could that be the recipe? candidates FCS coaches, even the ones with championships, are always a gamble. Then he became Houstons head coach and kicked butt in year one. Closing Comment: Okay, full disclosure: Jeff Monken is my favorite of this whole bunch. Closing Comment: Mullen isnt coaching anywhere right now, so hed be available. Why It Might Not: Theres not a lot to knock, but theres not a lot to get excited about, either. If Nebraska missed on Matt Campbell but wanted a similar type of coach, Candle is as close as you can get without the turnaround job at Iowa State. Kansas was willing to take a chance, and it very much felt like throwing anything at a wall to see what sticks. There would be cultural nuances that would take some adjusting to from both sides, but that would quickly fall by the wayside if he started winning. He hasnt interviewed for any vacancies since his retirement. Look at the teams against which they have lost. Air Force has been up and down but theyre generally solid. (They probably dont.). Why It Might Work: Theres no doubt in Bohls ability to coach and win. Nebraska football fired head coach Scott Frost following their difficult start to the 2022 season. Would he succeed in a Midwest spot? Aranda probably wont be coming into the Big Ten with the same level of naive arrogance, shooting off his mouth about how the conference should adjust to him. Ideal candidates will have a Master's degree in Social work, psychology, sociology, counseling, human development, or a closely related field. It could be fun. Why It Might Work: Canada did a remarkable job as Marylands interim HC. Closing Comment: The appeal of hiring a coach with the achievement of his second season aside, this doesnt seem like a great fit on the surface. The latest were internal issues with Jacksonville Jaguars players last season. The Cleveland Browns hired former Indianapolis Colts special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone last week. He also occasionally does TV analyst work for Fox Sports, and he stepped in to coach the Sooners for a bowl game when Lincoln Riley bolted for USC. Closing Comment: This would be intriguing but Taggarts status and resume isnt as hot as it was seven years ago. Why It Might Work: A lot of people attribute Tom Osbornes success to his degrees in educational psychology. As much as his teams have over-performed, they have also under-performed. Hes a Husker and currently serving as interim coach. That means 6-6 or even 7-5 might not be good enough for Nebraska, which absolutely has to hit a home run this time around. The first is the Big Names. He then went on to win two national championships at Florida. Iowa) ties and solid coaching, theres some question as to whether he could handle the style of the Big Ten. He seems like a solid head coach, but its hard to project him being either wildly successful or a disappointing failure. He was one of the Big Tens most underrated offensive coordinators, running a unique pro-style system that confused defenses with several motions. Why It Might Not: The Huskers have had mixed results with first time head coaches who needed to learn the job on the fly. It also worked out pretty well the last time the Huskers hired a Buckeye. A similar implosion if he were to come to Lincoln cant be ruled out. Why It Might Work: Hoke knows the Big Ten and the Midwest very well. All eyes across the country would be tuning in to watch how he does with the Huskersand it could work. Nebraska education officials are one step closer to axing the basic skills test that keeps some new teachers out of classrooms. Why It Might Work: Narduzzi seems tailor-made for the Big Ten. Hes now being talked about for bigger jobs, but was he a one-hit wonder? Who? Why It Might Not: At 64, Bohl is definitely on the tail end of his coaching career, and it might be asking a lot for the guy to completely rebuild his alma mater into something respectable. Why It Might Not: Moorhead might be wary of leading a big-time college football program after what happened at Mississippi State. Closing Comment: Its a risk. Nebraska coaching This could be the best time in his career to go after him. What gives? Meyer didn't even make it through a full season in 2021 with the Jags. One need look no further than his performance at WI-Whitewater, where he went an astounding 109-6 in FCS Division III, including six national championships. Traylors offense was among the best in the country in 2021 and they steamrolled through most of their schedule, stumbling in the regular season only to North Texas. Meghan Hall. So putting him in that position as the full-time Nebraska head coach, barring an Ed Orgeron-like interim season, would be a total crapshoot. She secured an endorsement from University of Nebraska athletic director Bob Devaney, revered in Nebraska for his success as the coach of the university football team. As soon as Matt Rhule was fired from the Carolina -Lance He got national attention in 2020 when he led Iowa State to its first division crown, including an upset of Oklahoma in the regular season (although they later lost the rematch in the Big 12 championship). 172d Bill Connelly. No, we need more. And yes, hes from the Stoops family and is an Iowa alumnus. Another guy who had a surprising breakout 12-win season in year two as a head coach, Traylor and UTSA had a magical year in 2021. Mostly known in Big Ten country for his three years at Michigan, Rich Rodriguez has actually been a head coach for a really long time and has a, shall we say, eclectic list of stops. Because Air Force is not exactly a headline-grabber in college football, some may find hiring Calhoun to be underwhelming and head-scratching. His teams at both places have generally shown well against Big Ten opponents. Would he be up to it? March 3, 2023 7:00 am ET. A couple years removed from college football may be enough to make everyone forget about the struggles in Austin. Husker fans might be wary because Stoops appears to be a blend of Mike Riley and Bo Pelini, but somehow hes made it work in Lexington. If you don't want to call him the new Bo Pelini, fine, but don't forget Pelini's legacy (67-27 in seven seasons) looks damn good right now. Despite some down years, hes done exceptionally well at Air Force and they have no desire to see him leave. He also lacks significant regional ties and seems more geared for the Pacific Northwest and Utah-Colorado areas. Campbell (10-7 in his last 17 games) may have simply hit his ceiling at Iowa State. Thats why its fun. He flamed out of the NFLtwice. And yeah, Im ranking thesebased on how appealing I think they are, the kind of fit theyd be, and how much energy or excitement their arrival would inject into the program. Hes a Youngstown State grad and famously served as Mark Dantonios aggressive DC at Michigan State. Why It Might Not: Taggart was presumably given every help and benefit at Florida State and his failure there was not just the result of impatient boosters. Even his one year at Oregon looked promising. His next gig has to be the absolute right fit. He certainly would be a good hire on paper, but youd be right to wonder if it would work out. Its an exciting time, right? Hes the current head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats. Herman quietly served as an analyst for the Chicago Bears last year and is now looking for a job. Could he follow NCAA rules? Trev Alberts would probably prefer someone who knows what hes doing. He certainly proved capable as head-coaching material, in the right situation. Theres no question he knows how to coach and recruit. A solid resume for a Big Ten coaching candidate. So stay tuned. He severely clashed with the athletic department and school officials, who were apparently looking for a reason to get rid of him. The 3 leading candidates to replace Frost were revealed by Bruce Jerry Kill: If Nebraska wants to poach a head coach from another school, Jerry Kill seems like a logical direction to go. And hes still young at 47. +, (Introductory note: So, I initially had this written and ready to post last week, but there was a technical glitch with the New Fanpost button which I had to contact SB Nation support about. While his teams arent on Clemsons level in terms of talent, they are always competitive. Why It Might Not: Theres no question that the shine has worn off of Tom Herman. Scott Frost, offensive coordinator, Oregon. Jon Hale. Patterson's skills were on display Saturday as he teamed with Longhorns defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski to limit Alabama to its fewest points in a true road game since 2017. This seems like a name fairly low on the totem pole and would likely signal desperation. Why It Might Not: Despite the love for Mickey Joseph, which is understandable, hes light on head coaching experiencehe led Langston University, an HBCU, for two seasons from 2011-2012, with a record of 13-7. Why It Might Not: The USF flop is a huge concern. How would he handle expectations in a much tougher environment? Admittedly there would be some excitement, but now with the controversy thats attached to him, its probably just not worth it. Since Nebraska is going into the bye week, I figured I might as well wait until after all the post-game articles before posting this. Closing Comment: Theres a lot to like with Matt Canada when you look under the surface. But at this point he seems set on staying in Florida. Previously he was a coordinator at Oklahoma, where he also did well. He knows how to coach up players, and most importantly, he knows how to run the damn ball, damn it. But similarly I try to look at how each one might work. A former Husker (who youve probably heard of), Bohl was the head coach at FCS powerhouse North Dakota State from 2003 to 2013. Hes defensive minded and knows college footballs most fertile recruiting grounds. Jim Leonhard, Wisconsin defensive coordinator: Like Oklahoma's Brent Venables, Leonhard has turned down a lot of interest from head coaching opportunities. His heyday at North Dakota State is tough to overlook, and his ties to Nebraska are very appealing. Texas snatched him up two years later, hoping for a return to greatness. Doerens time in Raleigh has been good but not great, and he hasnt lived up to the hype that came when he arrived after shocking everyone by going 12-2 at NIU. So Ive compiled an exhaustive list below of virtually every coaching candidate I think Nebraska could pursue. Chadwell followed it up by posting another 11-win season in 2021. (859) 414-6776. Why It Might Not: Everything went south in the second half of the 2021 season and Mullen got the ol ax from the Florida boosters. Why It Might Work: Hes 42 and is clearly seen as one of college football up-and-comers, as Campbell was before him. City elections include three mayoral candidates, 12 vying for Fickell famously turned down Michigan State to stay at Cincinnati, where he has pilfered their best recruit targets over the last half-decade. Why It Might Work: He's got an impressive record, and to have the country talking about Coastal Carolina when most people have never even heard of them is quite an accomplishment. Receivers coach Mickey Joseph will be the interim coach for the Huskers. Plus he got axed from the Raiders on his second stint because of controversial emails sent a decade ago. Just imagine the press conferences. Arandas second season as a head coach was a surprise breakout, where the Bears won 12 games and upset Oklahoma State in the conference championship. At most this would feel like a bridge coach. Closing Comment: It would be interesting to see Hoke roam the sidelines in Lincoln, and he would almost certainly do a better job than Scott Frost, but there isnt much he can provide in the long term. He has Big Ten bona fides from his days as Ohio States DC and would bring serious credibility to a Nebraska program looking to get competitive in the conference. Instead, it's seen a far-flung outpost in a league that suddenly boasts a presence in New York, Chicago and soon Los Angeles. He also appears to be one of the better assistant coaches in Lincoln. How committed would he be to staying at Nebraska long term if things started to work out? He has solid Midwest ties and knows how to recruit gems. Even when they made modest improvements in other areas, the Cornhuskers were consistently bad at a couple things: special teams and losing close games. Nebraska coaching candidates Why It Might Not: Kentucky demonstrated tremendous patience through his early years developing the program, when his record was 12-24 (4-20 in conference) after 3 seasons. Taylor is now the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals in the NFL and brought them all the way to the Super Bowl, before losing to the Rams. Like many coaches of SEC blue bloods, he got run out of town when the results started to taper off. He knows the Midwest and the Big Ten well. Gary Patterson, Texas analyst: This makes so much sense. His record at Washington is a somewhat less stellar 55-26, but he finished (or tied) first in the Pac-12 north division for three straight years, and won the conference championship twice. He has decent ties to the state and the Midwest which make him familiar with the local recruiting grounds. Creighton has taken his programs as far as they realistically could go, so he could be worth a look. Nebraska That cost Meyer a three-game suspension at the beginning of the 2018 season, his last with the Buckeyes. Gruden hasnt even sniffed, let alone showed interest, in a college head coaching job in his entire career, but that wont stop people from pounding the table for him. I hear his wife makes a mean plate of nachos. After 15 seasons, Calhoun has yet to win the Mountain West. The former Auburn head coach known for taking them to the last ever BCS championship game, Malzahn got run out of town after a few mediocre seasons by their standards and is now at UCF. He appears more ready for a jump to a mid-major. A lot can change over the course of the season. Some people are pounding the table for this guy, but to me, this is a fairly un-sexy pick. OBriens experience coaching quarterbacks both in college and the pros make him very appealing as a developer of talent. Why It Might Not: On the flip side, maybe hes stayed at the same place for eight years because his phone isnt exactly ringing off the hook. Closing Comment: You cant deny that youd be at least a little excited by this. A 54-22 record is solidly in the plus category, and he went 5-0 in bowl games as a head coach. Hes also been a successful OC at Oregon from 2020-2021. He is still a huge name that will be brought up with every vacancy at a major college football program. He seems like a guy who prefers to build a program rather than jump to a better job at the earliest chance. If youre looking for consistency, this might not be the best choice. Hes now at Wyoming, where his record is more mediocre. He fell behind at LSU and seemed to coast on his championship laurels. He produced Dak Prescott for the Dallas Cowboys and his first three seasons at Florida were very good. Im sure youve heard of him. When you hire an FCS coach, even one of the leagues best, youre rolling the dice. He might be all flash. Northwestern has played in two of the last four Big Ten Championship Games. Why It Might Work: Hes got a lot of energy for someone in his late sixties. Possible coaching candidates for Nebraska - CBSSports.com Although Mullen may have gotten fired in a profession with brutal expectations, there may have been problems underneath the surface. Nebraska coaching candidates Mark Stoops, Kentucky coach: Stoops has spent a decade methodically developing the Wildcats into an above-average, competent It would be fascinating, though. His best season was 2016 when he went 12-2 and lost to Georgia in the CFP. Why It Might Work: The jobs he did at Temple and Baylor were nothing short of spectacular. He didnt, but a lot of that was because he didnt have internal support. College football coaching search candidates: What we're Why It Might Not: His stops at East Tennessee State, Delta State (Mississippi), and the Charleston-Greenville schools put him firmly in a region of the country far from Nebraska, so he lacks regional ties. Ah, yes. He is obsessed with winning and is known for relentless coaching, sometimes to unhealthy levels. Why It Might Work: Strong was a top candidate at Texas for a reason. He was a bad fit in Austin, but his messaging was sound and seems like the perfect thing Big Ten programs would want. Closing Comment: Nebraska would certainly tell everyone where they stand in the Big Ten pecking order by poaching the dynamic head coach of a division rival, who also happens to be one of the best recruiters in the conference. His final year at Texas saw a massive recruiting drop, including reports that his own players were actively sabotaging visits. These are the coaches with far more pros than cons, generally speaking, who the majority of fans would probably be on board with, and other than that its exactly what it says on the tinmay generate excitement. Why It Might Not: Its Jon Gruden. That changed when he brought in Tom Allen, who took over after Wilson was oustedpartly from clashing with the community, among other things. Some argue that he was the one who built that program into what it is todaywinning 3 FCS national championships while he was there, and posting a record of 104-32.
